Message for American Citizens: Earthquake
Preparedness
In the last month, two moderate earthquakes of 5.2 and 5.0 magnitudes on the Richter scale were recorded in the Dominican Republic. Although these earthquakes were moderate in intensity and very limited structural damage was reported, the Embassy would like to remind all American citizens to be prepared for earthquakes and other disasters.
An important first step is to enroll with the Embassy so that in the event of any natural disaster or emergency, we will be able to keep you informed. You may enroll through the State Department's travel registration website,https://travelregistration.state.gov <https://travelregistration.state.gov/> . You and your family should create an emergency kit that contains basic supplies and have a communication plan. The plan should cover how to get to a safe place and how you will find members of your family if you are not in the same location when an earthquake happens. Take the time to locate safe spots in each room of your house, such as under a sturdy table or against an inside wall. You can hold earthquake drills to reinforce the location of safe spots and your communication plan.
To protect yourself during an earthquake, you should DROP to the ground; take COVER; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If you are inside, do not exit until you are sure it's safe. If you are outside, move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. After the earthquake, do not run as there may be aftershocks or debris in your path. If you become trapped, tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Only yell as a last resort as this may cause you to inhale dust. The Dominican government authorities, including the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia, firefighters, and police, will be responsible for providing assistance to foreigners in the Dominican Republic.
